Decoding Invisible Ink Messages
Grade 1 students practiced problem-solving and critical thinking by decoding messages written with invisible ink. This activity combined chemistry and logic, introducing students to the science behind invisible ink and got them thinking about materials and their properties and encouraged creative approaches to deciphering clues.

Exploring Trees as Habitats
Students learned how trees serve as essential habitats and ecosystems for wildlife and humans. This activity connected biology with environmental science, fostering an understanding of ecological balance and the role of trees in supporting life. Students learned about plant lifecycles, were introduced to the food chain and learned about some interesting animals that they did not know lived on, in and around trees.

Understanding Plane Trees in Shanghai
Higher-grade students investigated the introduction of Plane trees to Shanghai and their environmental benefits, such as producing oxygen, providing shade, and mitigating flooding. This project incorporated biology, geography, and civic awareness, helping students appreciate the urban ecosystem. Students also applied their math skills to calculate optimal locations for planting trees, integrating geometry and environmental planning into real-world problem-solving.

Leaf Chromatography Experiments
Students conducted experiments to discover why leaves change as winter approaches. This hands-on activity merged botany and chemistry, encouraging scientific inquiry and observation with many students discovering that the colours we see in the autumn can actually be found in leaves all year round.

Crafting Recycled Boats
A group of Grade 3 students represented the school in a boat racing competition, competing against students from our affiliated schools, crafting their boat, 田林龙, from recycled materials. This activity blended engineering, design thinking, and environmental responsibility, showcasing teamwork and ingenuity.

Engineering Roller Coasters
Students designed and tested creatively Halloween-themed roller coasters using marbles to simulate the ride. Many students successfully created exciting loops that would be thrilling on a real roller coaster. Some students created their roller coasters using a building tool on their tablets and were able to use video editing software to superimpose themselves onto the rides to ‘test’ them. This fun project helped them explore ideas like motion and force while practicing problem-solving and creativity.

Designing Board Games
Students in Grades 1 and 2 learned about the ‘power of play’ as they dived into the long history of games and designed, developed and refined their own simple board games, enhancing creativity, logic, and strategic thinking. Grade 3 students took this one step further by more complex elements with opportunities to make choices etc. Over a two-week period students built and tested their games and looked out for any opportunities they could find to improve them.

Blue Screen Technology
Grade 1 students explored movie-making magic by creating slime and then digitally changing it with blue screen technology. This activity merged digital literacy with creativity, introducing students to video editing and special effects.

Casein Plastic
Our younger students explored the world of chemistry by transforming milk into casein, a natural plastic. This hands-on activity demonstrated the power of scientific transformation and introduced students to sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. Combining creativity with science, students crafted their own festive decorations from the homemade casein.

Algae String
Older students took on the challenge of creating biodegradable string by extracting and refining algae. This project merged biology, chemistry, and engineering, showcasing the potential of renewable materials. Students are going to use the string to craft friendship bracelets, incorporating traditional knotting techniques.

Through these engaging projects, our STEM program empowers students with skills that will shape their future. As well as developing their problem-solving abilities and creativity they also learn to think critically about the world around them. These hands-on experiences build a foundation in collaboration, innovation, and global awareness—essential skills for navigating the challenges of the modern world, whilst humbly learning from the wisdom and teachings of those who have gone before them. Whether experimenting with renewable materials, crafting innovative designs, or exploring future technologies, our students are gaining confidence and a sense of responsibility to make meaningful contributions to society.
