In the first two weeks, the first SESID "Little IBMer" competition was held in full swing on the campus of SESID. Twelve game development teams from three classes of Grade 5 released their products on the release meeting, and received comments from expert judges and also won angel investors’ favor.
Ipad +
Before the launch of the conference, the fifth graders had already spent a semester using the graphical programming knowledge they had learned according to the teaching videos provided by IBM volunteers. In accordance with the agile development model, students worked on the iPad to develop and design a game for the first graders. In the past semester, students determined the product theme, researched target users, analyzed user stories, compiled programs and completed the game design.
The students' imaginations were so rich that they created endless possibilities on a iPad. One of the groups used the learning style on MathTopia to develop the "Equation World" game for junior pupils in the third grade. Combined with their own learning and game experience, one group developed a game to practice Chinese quantifiers for the first graders. Another group redesigned a classic game to consolidate their knowledge under the encouragement of the game. The fifth graders presented their works on the Product Launch Conference, shining brightly.
The 12 game development teams in the fifth grade were divided into three groups and displayed their products at three conferences. At each conference, expert judges were composed of the information technology teacher, the art teacher, subject teachers, and foreign teachers. In accordance with different target users of each game, students from various grades, namely, the first, second, and third grades, were invited as angel investors. After the discussion, the decision that whether the product can be successfully launched or not would be made. The successfully launched products obtained the online qualification and received virtual investment from angel investors.
To ensure the fairness of the competition, an angel investor could not have siblings studying in the fifth grade. Besides, the expert judges should be teachers who currently do not teach the fifth grade. This form of refereeing would make this game more fair and open. In the end, combining the investment amount of angel investors and the opinions of the expert judges, it was decided to award the following prizes,: the Financing Champion, the Best Interface Design Award, the Most Academic Value Award, the Best Technological Innovation Award, and the Best Five Awards for the Exhibition of Style Award.
Considering the special isolation situation of Class 5 (1), we changed the conference to an online format. The main venue and branch venues were connected by Classin platform. Although it was the first time for them to present in this way, they showed full professionalism and intentions facing occasional equipment and signal problems during the conference. The students were stimulated by the enthusiasm and on-site atmosphere. Team spirit and professional experience were strengthened. For the students, this conference would be a perfect curtain call for learning information technology at this phase as well as a wonderful answer for graduation from elementary school.
